ABOUT us
ACT YYC is grassroots organization based in Calgary with a chapter at the University of Calgary that is focused on supporting low-income women, youth, and immigrants in achieving their short-term goals to aid them in their long-term pursuit of a better quality of life.
In our first year, we received $2250 in grants, allowing us to provide 300+ hampers! We hope to do so much more in the future for those in need!
Why specifically women, youth, and immigrants?
In 2022, a Vibrant Communities Calgary report suggested that Calgary is the second most unequal city in Canada, with the liveable wage being $22.40. Needless to say, poverty is a growing issue that needs to be addressed.
Often underserved in the communities they live in, our target population is particularly vulnerable during times of crisis. If given the proper resources, women and children have the potential and ability to attain their dreams and achieve their life-long goals. However, societal barriers and personal circumstances prevent them from doing so.
In particular, women do not experience societal equality, effectively deepening the struggle to meet their daily needs. As caregivers, this struggle can also negatively impact the youth in our communities by affecting their quality of life, and sense of worth.
With poverty having detrimental effects on the mental and physical well-being of both women and youth, we work to combat it and restore their sense of self-worth. By doing so, we hope to create a new generation of confident leaders who can create a better life for themselves and those around them.
our mission
ACT YYC strives to help low-income and impoverished women, youth, and immigrants in achieving short-term goals. More importantly, we also deliver everyday human experiences to these underserved communities to restore a sense of self-worth to our target populations.
A sense of self-worth is vital in both mental and physical well-being which then leads to an increased ability to achieve their long-term goals and a better quality of life overall. Through this mission, we hope to be the Act that changes their lives in the present, and for the future.
